One for Books

 What is one for books?

One for Books is a program through Scholastic Book Fairs that allows community members to help promote reading in the school and through non-profit organizations.  Schools can use the money donated to improve their library collection or for reading promotions.

Scholastic Book Fairs will match the One for Books dollars raised with a donation of up to a million books to three non-profit programs devoted to improving reading skills among children: Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots.

Our One for Books Goals for the 2007-2008 School Year.

This year our goal is to raise enough money to give every Winburn student at least one free book to promote reading over their winter break, spring break, and summer break.  In order to achieve this goal I will need volunteers to help contact local businesses for support.

We will be collecting dollar donations during September and October.  Fifty percent of all donations will go to the One for Books program.  The other fifty percent will be donated to the Susan G. Kormen Breast Cancer Foundation.

How we used One for Books during the 2005-2006 School Year.

At the end of last year, Winburn collected over $700 for the One for Books program.   The money went to purchase books for Winburn’s students to promote summer reading.  Each student had the opportunity to chose two books.  Scholastic matched the amount raised by sending books to Toys for Tots and to aid cities affected by natural disasters.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the One for Books program.  The following organizations or businesses donated money, time, books, or gift certificates.
