Dear Winburn Students and Guardians:

Do you feel like the school year just ended? I know, I do, but I am excited and ready to return for another great year at Winburn Middle School. I look forward to hearing from you about the cool things you did and the places you visited over the summer. I also want to hear about the awesome book you read. J

I would like to take this opportunity to provide a few details for the start of this school year.

By now you should have received a letter from your team leader; the purpose of the team letter is to introduce you to the teachers and to provide information that is unique to your team. If you have not received a letter by July 25, please call the school at 381-3967 and we will forward your name and address to your team leader.

During the 2006-2007 school year a few teachers and parents worked with Dr. Larry Allen, former Superintendent of Jessamine County School System to develop a Vision and Mission statement for Winburn Middle School. From the words of Deborah Moore, our Instructional Coach, “A vision statement is an expression of what we would like our school to become in five years and includes the aspects of being a Warrior that we feel are essential.” Therefore, our vision statement reads

Winburn Middle School

Warriors

Each one, Every one

A Successful Learner

After we created the vision statement we worked on the mission statement. Once again, I will quote Ms. Moore, “A mission statement includes the elements that we believe are essential components of our school in order to achieve the vision statement.” Therefore, our mission statement reads

A welcoming community of learners

   C elebrating our Diversity

T aking pride in our achievements

The staff of Winburn Middle School is committed to the vision and mission statements. It will be the foundation for every decision we make as we strive to do what is best for our students. We can not do this alone and will depend on you and your family’s support as we provide you with a rigorous curriculum. Parents/guardian, we ask that you speak with your child every night to see if he/she has homework and encourage him/her to read at least 15 minutes every night. Research shows that reading is the foundation for all learning. If a child can not read then he/she will struggle in math, social studies, science, language arts and the elective classes, we offer at Winburn.

Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 7, in the gymnasium. At this time you will meet the staff and hear from the PTSA. Please note the time that your grade level is meeting in the gym.

Sixth grade orientation -- 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Seventh and Eight grades orientation -- 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The first day of school is Monday, August 13, our school hours are 9:05 a.m. – 3:55 p.m. Students may enter the building at 8:35 a.m. and will report to the library, gymnasium, or to the cafeteria. Once students select an area they must remain there and will be dismissed by staff at 8:55 a.m. All students are expected to be in their first period class by 9:05 a.m. focused and ready to learn.

Bus riders are dropped off in front of the building. Therefore, the bus lanes are off limits to car riders and walkers from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. At the end of the school day bus riders are dismissed out the front of the building to catch their buses.

Car riders can be dropped off in the staff parking lot and walk up the side walk. We will have staff located in the parking lot to direct traffic. I ask that you be mindful of the walkers who will be walking in the cross walk area of the parking lot, and follow the directions of staff. At the end of the school day car riders are dismissed to walk down the front hall and exit out the side door. Staff who are directing traffic, will let you know when it is safe to exit the parking lot.

Walkers are to walk in the yellow cross walk area in the parking and up the side walk. Please refrain from walking between the parked cars. Walkers are not allowed to walk across the football field to and from school. At the end of the school day car riders are dismissed to walk down the front hall and exit out of the side door. When walkers are dismissed in the afternoon, we ask that you leave campus as quickly as possible. Loitering at the side door or in the parking lot is not permitted.

Enclosed is a copy of the dress code guidelines, if you have any questions concerning the dress code please feel free to call the school. It is important that we adhere to the dress code, parents please support us and ensure that your child follows the guidelines. Failure to follow the dress code may result in a parent phone call, detention or Saturday School.

We have a motto that we adopted. The motto is Winburn Middle School, “The School to Watch”. We know that we are making great strides in narrowing the achievement gap. However, we must all agree that we are in this together. Every staff member, parent/guardian and stakeholder in this community has to work together to educate the students of Winburn. There is an old African proverb that states “It takes a village to raise a child.” With school, family and community working together, we are the village for the students at Winburn Middle School.

I look forward to a fantastic school year J

 Sincerely,

 Tina Stevenson, Principal
